SAN DIMAS, CALIFORNIA – Clinlab.AI and Michigan Kidney Consultants (MKC) announced a partnership to launch Michigan’s first Smart Lab for nephrology, an in-house laboratory (often referred to as a Physician Office Lab) expected to support over 40,000 nephrology patients annually while processing hundreds of thousands of diagnostic results each year. Once operational, the lab will utilize Clinlab.AI’s agentic AI platform to automate quality control across every test run, optimize lab inventory including reagents, consumables, and diagnostic test supplies, and provide billing support aligned to in-house diagnostic workflows—delivering a level of real-time operational intelligence and automation not previously available in a clinical specialty practice setting.
As the largest independent nephrology practice in Michigan, MKC’s adoption of this in-house lab model will mark a shift away from traditional offsite reference lab dependency. By bringing high-volume diagnostics directly into the practice, the lab is expected to reduce turnaround time, minimize delays tied to external processing, and enable physicians to act on results faster and with greater confidence.
The lab will support core nephrology diagnostics, including quantitative urinalysis and blood testing, while leveraging AI-enabled automation to monitor quality trends, flag irregularities, and maintain consistent performance at scale. For a practice serving tens of thousands of patients, this approach is expected to deliver greater operational control, stronger reliability, and faster access to clinically actionable data.
“Having this level of diagnostic capability and oversight on-site will fundamentally change how we deliver care,” said Dr. Fahd Al-Saghir, MD, President of Michigan Kidney Consultants. “It allows our teams to move faster, reduce friction in the diagnostic process, and better support patients managing chronic kidney disease.”

Built in partnership with Beckman Coulter, the lab will be powered by scalable diagnostic instrumentation integrated with Clinlab.AI’s lab automation and analytics platform. Together, the companies aim to enable specialty practices to modernize diagnostic infrastructure without the traditional burden of increased staffing, operational complexity, or fragmented workflows.
By applying AI directly to lab operations as part of the underlying infrastructure, the platform is designed to deliver continuous quality monitoring, real-time operational visibility, and scalable performance once deployed. This capability is expected to be particularly valuable in nephrology, where high testing volumes and time-sensitive decisions demand consistency and reliability.
“This initiative reflects where specialty diagnostics is headed,” said Abdul Hamid Halabi, CEO of Clinlab.AI. “By helping practices bring sophisticated lab capabilities in-house, we’re enabling more informed decision-making and a stronger foundation for long-term patient care.”
